On April 25 , 2025 former U.S. Representative Barbara Lee, a member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, was elected as the 52nd Mayor of Oakland, California. The sorority celebrated her historic victory on social media, highlighting her "trailblazing, advocacy, and championship for justice". This marks her return to public office after a long career in Congress. Her political journey includes working on Shirley Chisholm's campaign, involvement with the Black Panther Party, and service in the California State Assembly and Senate.
