SIGMA GAMMA RHO SORORITY HISTORY
Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. was founded on November 12, 1922, at Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana, by seven visionary educators: Mary Lou Allison Gardner Little, Dorothy Hanley Whiteside, Vivian Irene White Marbury, Nannie Mae Gahn Johnson, Hattie Mae Annette Dulin Redford, Bessie Mae Downey Rhoades Martin, and Cubena McClure. These remarkable women established the sorority with a mission to uplift their communities through education, sisterhood, and service during a time of significant racial and gender inequality.
Since its founding, Sigma Gamma Rho has grown to include over 100,000 members across 500+ chapters worldwide, making a global impact through programs that address education, health, and community empowerment. The sorority is the only member of the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) founded at a predominantly white institution, reflecting its unique legacy of breaking barriers. Guided by its motto, "Greater Service, Greater Progress," Sigma Gamma Rho continues to lead with purpose through national initiatives such as Project CRADLE Care, Swim 1922, and Operation Big Bookbag. For over a century, the sorority has remained a beacon of excellence, service, and empowerment for women and the communities they serve.
